THE GREAT CLASSICS

Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture
Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5, ‘Emperor’
Elgar ‘Enigma’ Variations

Conductor Simon Wright
Piano Diana Brekalo

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to be returning to Scunthorpe for the first concert of their new 2014 season at The Baths Hall.

Highly regarded for their world-class performances, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be opening this magnificent season with three great classics. The scurrying sound of ‘fairy feet’, as they scamper about the stage, is just one of many instrumental effects Mendelssohn uses in his Overture to re-create the mysterious and magical atmosphere of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Beethoven’s wonderful Piano Concerto No.5 is the centre piece of tonight’s concert, performed by international award winning pianist Diana Brekalo. This was Beethoven’s final masterwork for piano; the beauty and tenderness of the music makes it one of the most admired piano concertos performed, and heard, in concert halls today. The performance will close with Elgar’s ever popular and quintessentially English orchestral portraits, the ‘Enigma’ Variations.
